ANKARA – A new regulation published Wednesday in Türkiye’s Official Gazette mandates that employers must cover the deportation costs of undocumented foreign workers and their immediate family members.
Issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the regulation outlines financial responsibilities for repatriation-related expenses such as accommodation, transportation, and healthcare.
Employers found to be employing foreign nationals without valid work permits will be held responsible for the costs of returning not only the worker but also their spouse and children, where applicable. They have one month to make the payment. If unpaid, the amount will be collected through tax enforcement channels.
The Migration Management Directorate will forward the payment request to the relevant tax office, based on the employer’s income or corporate tax registration.
The regulation also caps repatriation-related accommodation fees to a three-month maximum, with rates set annually by the Presidency of Migration Management.
As of 2024, Türkiye had issued 300,852 valid foreign work permits, according to ministry data.
